New blog

Well there’s a new blog on the horizon. It’s for our holiday this year to Canada, well British Columbia to be precise, But we are not doing the usual route, did you really think we would?

It is still a work in progress but if you are interested head on over to

Out of this World

I’ve taken the plunge and the new blog has been published. Well, just the bare bones but I’ll keep working on it.

It’s been difficult to find a name and theme because this holiday is shaping up to be such a weird and wonderful mix.

From geological wonders, hot springs and calderas covered by lush meadows to snow capped mountains and deserts. Native American, Spanish and Mexican influenced towns, buildings and history.  National Parks, national monuments, wilderness areas and state parks.  The “blue sky” of Albuquerue (nod to all the Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul fans out there), Los Alamos (birthplace of the atomic bomb), the Trinity site and New Mexico’s long history with space (and aliens!!).  The list goes on and on.
Almost every day we will see something that most probably will be breathtaking, hence “Out of this World“.
It’s going to be a very full 2 weeks!

Recurring theme

I’m afraid that I have a confession to make.  Tickets were booked back in January but I’ve been too busy to let you all know.  So here it is, a new holiday is on the cards.  No prizes for guessing where the destination is!  Some may say we’re a tad boring, others may say predictable but the truth is we still haven’t seen everything we want to see.  We amended our holiday last time so that we could fit in a few days in Vegas and the Grand Canyon for Aad and Ina.  So this time it is Southern Arizona and Western New Mexico.  That part is definite.  The actual locations and route have been changed at least 20 times, I must be getting difficult in my old age. 🙂  But one thing is definite, we fly to Phoenix.

After that is any one’s guess.  At the moment the planning is Apache Junction – Winslow – Holbrook – Chinle – Ship Rock – Gallup – Jemez Springs – Albuquerque – Las Cruces – Tucson – Phoenix.  Lots of parks and National Monuments and not too many kilometers.  Win Win if you ask me!

I will start on the blog soon, so keep checking back.

Couldn’t Resist

Stetson hat

You have probably guessed already but a new holiday has been planned and flights booked.  Well the flights were actually booked months ago but I’ve not had much time to get the other things organized.  This time we are flying to Denver and are going to visit Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and a wee bit of Utah.  I have started on the blog but still have a long way to go, it is a work in progress.

Fate

Having spent Sunday watching films about the Keys and Miami, the feelings of anxiousness were gradually making way for slight bursts of excitement.  A new snorkel set has arrived together with flippers which are almost the length of my arm!  Swimming shirts have been ordered for protection from the sun whilst snorkelling.  But someone somewhere has decided that I’m not allowed to look forward to this too much.  The flights which were due to recommence on the 13th are not showing on the departure list.  Air traffic control at Brussels Airport have decided to go on strike and there is a wildfire at The Everglades. Oh and the queues trying to get into the airport are leading to hour and a half delays.  Jinxed or what!!!

Brussels Airport

Well with one thing and the other it’s been a strange few weeks.  On 22nd March Brussels Airport and a metro station were targeted by suicide bombers.  On top of the obvious devastation, 31 people were murdered and hundreds injured.
With the airport only reopening a couple of days ago, for  a limited number of flights, we have spent the last days wondering if the holiday will be going ahead.  Rather selfish maybe but it also brings a number of unwanted questions. Although I don’t feel unsafe and the added safety measures should help, I do worry that maybe TJ will be bothered by it.  Is it wise taking my child to the site of a bombing?  I feel very strongly about not letting our lives be affected by terrorism but my son’s safety and wellbeing is paramount.  At this moment the expectation is that the airport will function at only about 20% capacity for the near future so we’re not even sure if we can leave from Brussels.  Trivial maybe but a worry none the less.  Let’s hope that the coming days will bring more clarity.
